Situated on a rare and secluded nine acre virgin forest is new residence of groundbreaking design. A long driveway approach was carved into the dense trees and a clearing was created where the house would take shape. Evoking to the street name, this house was meant to be the pearl of the forest.
The architect set out to create a house that was one with its natural surroundings. The vision was to design a house that was a connection to nature, reimagining the way we escape into the natural world.
This cutting-edge architecture blends seamlessly into its beautiful surroundings. The curvilinear front façade is composed of two contrasting metal finishes; brushed and mirror reflective panels. These panels, arranged in a rhythmic sequence that engages nature, were placed to reflect the dramatic scenery of the surroundings beyond. The brushed metal panels receive shadows and the reflective metal panels artfully reflect the natural surroundings providing a constantly changing pattern minute by minute, day by day and with the changing seasons. The front façade at once presents dramatically the impressive scale of the house and at the same time blends into the woods. The façade also provides a sense of privacy, serving as a natural buffer between the front and private forest beyond. By contrast the rear façade incorporates generous glazing which allows a visual gateway to the sylvan setting, again connecting the inside with out. Every window in the house frames nature.
Flawless construction, the finest quality materials, finishes and systems were employed throughout the interior of this house. Spacious combined living/dining area is with abundant transparency and light and is open to uninterrupted views of the landscape. A modern kitchen with white lacquer cabinets accent rich wood paneling throughout the main floor. Everything from color choices, materials, finishes and textures were carefully chosen by the architect. Wood accents throughout adds soft and welcoming sense to the space increasing the warmth of the house recalling the natural setting outside. Nature is present in every room by view and by the choice of natural finishes.

The landscape concept embraces the natural beauty of the forested site by incorporating soft and natural landscape features. The landscape design is not intended to be heavily structured by sophisticated in a highly curated yet seamlessly natural layout of trees, meadow flowers and grasses. z

This modern residence is a true expressive use of modern materials in a landscaped wooded area. The natural elements help to create a unique architectural character. The living spaces are arranged in a free flowing plan yet each space is well defined. The ceiling heights are over 9 feet on all floors rising to 12 feet in the dining and living room spaces adding to the drama of the open spaces opening onto the pool and pool terrace. Custom metal and wood stairs connect the floors with sculptural form. Large floor to ceiling windows frame the private woods beyond as if they were paintings. Nothing but flora, fauna, foliage are seen from every room. On the expansive rooftop deck you are in the treetops with only sky above. Blending natural elements such as wood and metal create a beautiful modern space.
The second floor is a private volume of the house that accommodates a total of 5 bedrooms including one master suite. Much of the rear landscape and private infinity-edge pool is shielded from the front entrance view but visible from the upper floor balconies plus the entire roof deck. The lower level of the house offers a three car garage as well as a family room that has patio and pool access, and there is also a laundry room and storage on this level.
Along its winding roads are several pre-Revolutionary Dutch Colonial homes, two swimming clubs, a country day camp, a nine-hole golf course and houses with horse barns set on large lots. The area suggests rural New England rather than a community just 15 miles from the George Washington Bridge. The traffic at the intersection of Old Tappan and Orangeburg Roads, two of the borough's most heavily used arteries, is not considered heavy enough to warrant a signal. Predominantly agricultural for most of its history, Old Tappan is today an affluent suburb. It is bordered on the north by the hamlet of Tappan, N.Y., on the east by Northvale and Norwood, on the south and east by Harrington Park and on the south and west by River Vale. Because of its open spaces and quaint environment, Old Tappan has become a desirable area for prospective home buyers and prices have risen to meet the increased demand.
On the basis of standardized national tests, children who attend Old Tappan schools rank in the 75th percentile or above in reading and math. More than 65 percent of the faculty members have advanced degrees and 8 out to 10 high school seniors go on to higher education. Children attend kindergarten through eighth grade at the elementary and middle schools, graduating to Northern Valley Regional High School on Central Avenue, one of two regional high schools covering seven communities in northern Bergen County. The high school district features a comprehensive curriculum, with special programs for handicapped and gifted students and opportunities for advanced work in computer education. The average Scholastic Aptitude Test score for last year's senior class was 514 in math and 462 in verbal skills, well above national and state averages. The district had 7 National Merit Scholarship finalists and 31 semifinalists last year.
Situated within a 15- to 20-minute drive of major shopping malls, residents feel little need to to expand their own small shopping district, which consists of a grocery store and several small variety and convenience shops, built on former farm property along Old Tappan Road. There are several good, moderately priced restaurants. A bus line runs commuter service along Old Tappan Road to midtown Manhattan in about 45 minutes to an hour for a small fare.
